    Born in Pennsylvania, he was the third generation of successful sculptors. From when he was a small boy, he was always making “stuff”; toys, utensils, and objects out of bits of string, wire, but- tons, cloth, wood and tin. He always had a sense of whimsy about his objects and invented the “Mobile”; a way to compose colorful shapes, and fine lines moving in a constantly changing arrangement. He is also known for creating and performing his own circus. Join us for a whimsical look into his world.

  • Rasa Vitkauskaite Piano Concert

    Rasa Vitkauskaite has won top prizes at numer- ous prestigious international piano competitions. In 2007, Rasa won a Kathryn Wasserman Davis $10,000 grant that supported her tour promoting peace in Israel. Her most recent concert engagements include performances at festivals in China, South Korea, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Hungary, and the U.S. She is also the pianist of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rasa is a fac- ulty member at the Concord Conservatory.

    Our speaker for the Women’s Circle Breakfast this month is James Moran, Vice-President for Programs and Outreach at the American Antiquarian Society. His topic is “Princess Adelaide Has the Whooping Cough: Nineteenth Century Reform and the Transformation of American Society.” In the decades before the Civil War, America underwent a dramatic transformation with stunning changes in technology, commerce, communications and the role and power of individuals in society. This lecture explores this dynamic era and the reform movements that so significantly changed American history as a result of these advances. Join us for this intriguing presentation and find out about the title of Jim’s talk! In his role at the AAS, Jim oversees the Society’s promotional activities, the Creative and Performing Artists and Writers Fellowships, and all programming aimed at the general public and K-12 educators and students.

    A lecture presented by the personnel from Worcester Schubertiade. Executive Director Stanley Wilson has been with Worcester Schubertiade since its inception in the summer of 2012. With a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the Longy School of Music and his time working towards a Graduate Certificate in Arts Administration at Boston University Metropolitan College, he enjoys his time running this newly founded performing arts non-profit. Artistic Director Sondra Kelly, a Metropolitan Opera Artist, joined Worcester Schubertiade’s artistic team during the summer of 2016. She is the Principal Stage Director of Opera Connecticut and has a young artist program in Boston, New England Opera Intensive, for which she is the Artistic Director. Her recordings include Sony Classical, Deutsche Grammaphon and Koch Schwann and her DVD’s are all “Live from the Met”.

  • Gary Hylander Lecture “An American Sampler: Secretaries of State”

    Gary continues the series with Dean Acheson. Acheson was the first Secretary of State of the Cold War. He and President Truman presided over the emergence of the United States as the world’s first super power. The title of his autobiography “Present at Creation” speaks to this historic transformation. Working together, Truman and Dulles crafted the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine and NATO.

    The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky based on the stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann and Alexandre Dumas. This production is the only Massachusetts Nutcracker outside of Boston to feature a full-sized live orchestra. Previous registration required.

    Dan Clark, also known as “The Singing Trooper” performed in uniform while representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during his 20 year career. During this tenure with the State Police he performed at more than 2,500 events for Federal, State, Local, and Military functions. In addition he performed 26 foreign National Anthems, in native dialect, for visiting dignitaries and sporting events. Please welcome Trooper Dan to Southgate.
