About Southgate at Shrewsbury
Southgate at Shrewsbury is proud to bring excellent programs to our residents, so they can enjoy each day and live life to the fullest. Each new month brings the same caliber of excellent entertainment in the categories of art, music and education that our residents have come to expect. Furthermore, we make sure to add new and unique events to the mix each month, in order to keep our residents exploring, growing and learning.
Here are some exciting events happening this May:
Private Tour of Slater Mill National Park
History buffs will enjoy heading to the banks of the Blackstone River in Pawtucket, RI for a private tour of Slater Mill National Park. The tour, which is scheduled for the end of May, will tell the story of this historic textile mill complex and illuminate the role it played in the Industrial Revolution.
Southgate’s 2018 Olympic Games
Residents from all areas of the Southgate at Shrewsbury community are coming together to celebrate “The Year of the Sloth” in the Southgate 2018 Olympic Games. This two-day event is always a laugh riot and a huge favorite with the residents.
Matthew Driscoll presents “Iceland’s Manuscript Heritage”
While life at Southgate at Shrewsbury certainly has its fair share of fun and games, there are plenty of educational events to keep things well rounded. This May, one of those intellectual offerings is a presentation by Matthew Driscoll, who received his doctorate from the University of Oxford and has served as a Professor of Old Norse Philology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark for the past 23 years. He will discuss the long history of literature from the medieval period to the present day and show examples of manuscript production from different historic periods.
Southgate at Shrewsbury is always filled with music, great food, artistic endeavors and educational events. Think of all the fun you’d have if you lived here! Why not experience it for yourself by giving us a call to schedule a tour?
With music, dancing, good food and other festivities, there’s truly no better pace to celebrate any holiday than at Southgate at Shrewsbury. That fact was fully evident this March, with the numerous events that residents were able to attend in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
On March 1, the Murphy Academy of Irish Step Dance (a group that placed in the top 3 of the regional championships) took its mission to spread the magic and majesty of Irish dance to the stage of Southgate at Shrewsbury’s own theater. With lively steps and song, the group certainly succeeded in sharing their love of Irish dance with all of our residents who attended the show.
That wasn’t the only Irish dancing planned for the month, either. Southgate residents took a special trip to Mechanics Hall to see a troupe of world-champion Irish step dancers in Music Worcester’s “Dublin Irish Dance.” Together, they performed a show called “Stepping Out,” which aims to use dance as a tool for creating a multifaceted impression of Ireland, showcasing the sights and sounds of Irish culture.
Then, residents were treated to some special festive music, with Kevin Farley: The Irish Music Guy. Farley plays 12 instruments and has a repertoire of more than 750 Irish tunes, so he had no problem entertaining everyone in the audience.
It’s hard to believe that we are already one month into 2018. But just because the new year is well under way doesn’t mean that there is nothing new in store for February. Southgate at Shrewsbury residents can always expect the unexpected when it comes to programs and events, and February exemplifies that fact.
Residents can participate in a genealogy lecture and discussion that will help beginners learn how to start the search into their family history and will help more practiced genealogists dig deeper to expand their family tree. There are exciting recreation activities like Water Volleyball and even a Mini Golf Tournament for those looking to stay active and fit while having fun.
Music fans will enjoy the third installment in a series of trips to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which is planned for the beginning of the month. Our residents who like to stay close to home are also in luck. There are several musical acts that are schedule for performances right at Southgate at Shrewsbury throughout the month of February.
