    The speaker for our Women’s Circle Breakfast is Ben Railton, Professor of English and American Studies at Fitchburg State University. The title of his presentation is “Of Thee I Sing: Competing Celebratory and Critical Patriotisms in American History.” From the return of “love it or leave it” and renewed attention to Colin Kaepernick’s anthem protests, to debates over the New York Times’ 1619 Project, 2019 has seen a number of prominent discussions center around critiques of America. But these are simply the latest salvos in a foundational and ongoing contest between celebratory and critical patriotisms. Examining the histories of those competing forms of patriotism helps us better understand and take part in our current debates. Professor Railton has been at FSU for 14 years and has taught numerous courses in American Literature and Studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level. All are welcome to join us for the presentation.

  • Trip to DeCordova Museum

    The DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum encompasses 30 acres of beautiful rolling woodlands and lawns, and is the largest park of its kind in New England. The Sculpture Park provides a constantly changing landscape of large-scale, outdoor, modern and contemporary sculpture and site-specific installations. The Park hosts more than 60 works, the majority of which are on loan to the Museum. Our guided tour of the Sculpture Park will be followed by a self-guided tour of the museum. Previous registration was required.

    Our Men’s Breakfast Club welcomes Dr. Harvey Clermont whose topic this morning is “Medications” . He will discuss the categories, prescription meds, OTC meds, dietary supplements and what do you truly need. He will also speak on who regulates (or fails to regulate) these and touch on both polypharmacy and expiration dates. Dr. Clermont is a retired board certified general and vascular surgeon who has practiced in Worcester since 1973. He is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and a former U.S. Navy Medical Officer. In Part One this afternoon we will discuss the introduction of slavery into the Americas and how the framers of the Constitution dealt with slavery. Dr. Gary Hylander, PhD is a scholar and professor who has taught at Stonehill College and Framingham State.
