Jack Craig-Music with Class!
From the Broadway Blockbusters Series-“Fiddler on the Roof”! Experience some of Broadway’s greatest music by singing your way right through the synopsis of this landmark Broadway musical. The program has information on the creation of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and your chance to sing: ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ ‘To Life’, ‘Sunrise, Sunset’, and other hits from the Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock score.
The speaker for our Women’s Circle Breakfast is Ben Railton, Professor of English and American Studies at Fitchburg State University. The title of his presentation is “Of Thee I Sing: Competing Celebratory and Critical Patriotisms in American History.” From the return of “love it or leave it” and renewed attention to Colin Kaepernick’s anthem protests, to debates over the New York Times’ 1619 Project, 2019 has seen a number of prominent discussions center around critiques of America. But these are simply the latest salvos in a foundational and ongoing contest between celebratory and critical patriotisms. Examining the histories of those competing forms of patriotism helps us better understand and take part in our current debates. Professor Railton has been at FSU for 14 years and has taught numerous courses in American Literature and Studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level. All are welcome to join us for the presentation.
