Southgate's Anniversary Show "The Kennedy Center Honors"
Throughout its 40-year history, the Kennedy Center Honors has redefined America’s perception of its artistic legacy and reinvented the way this nation rewards its artists. The annual gala serves as the year’s crowning event for millions of American arts lovers as we pay tribute to our nation’s preeminent artists with performances by great stars who have followed in their footsteps. Let me repeat that “as we pay tribute to our nation’s preeminent artists with performances by great stars…” And WHO KNEW those great stars live right here at Southgate? And WHO KNEW the Kennedy Center Honors gala would be held right here at Southgate to commemorate our 30th anniversary? ALL Residents and their guests are welcome to join us in the Flanagan Theater for one, two or all three performances as the Southgate community celebrates “the best of times”.
Richard Hughes Silent Movie Shows
Musician and silent movie historian Richard Hughes presents “Shoulder Arms” starring Charlie Chaplin produced in 1918. While the world was healing from “The Great War”, Charlie (in the movie) was busy surrounding the German soldiers – single handedly – and capturing the Kaiser. There was also time for romance and plenty of farcical action. Who else could make a comedy out of such a horrific tragedy? Richard accompanies the film and shares his vast knowledge of this vintage form of entertainment!

Women's Circle Breakfast
Our speaker is James Welu, Director Emeritus of the Worcester Art Museum. His topic is “Judith Leyster: A Woman Painter in A Man’s World.” In 1993 WAM presented the first exhibition of Judith Leyster, the most famous woman painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Although recognized in her day as a “leading star,” Leyster was overlooked from the time of her death in 1660 until the end of the nineteenth century. As Director of the Worcester Art Museum in 1993, Jim initiated Leyster’s first exhibition. This lecture explores the many achievements of this pioneering Dutch master and the exciting world in which she lived. James Welu joined the staff of the Worcester Art Museum in 1974 as Assistant Curator and went on to serve six years as Chief Curator and 25 years as Director. All are welcome to Jim’s presentation.
