    AMERICAN ART Part III – (1950 -1990)

In the second half of the 20th century, America breaks free of it’s European bonds to defy convention, and then dominate the entire art world. There was an explosion of creativity on this side of the ocean. American Art grows up and demonstrates it’s own unique personality; innovative, and sometimes controversial. But whether you swear by it, or at it, it is always fun. Join us for a look at how art in America evolved in the modern era, from Pop Art to Grandma Moses, how it took the seat of power with all its new directions, energy and nerve. You can’t “like” it all, but you may go home with more than you thought. Where in the world do you think it is going next?

These are some of the critical elements that characterize Rabbi Suri’s presence on the bima, under the chuppah, and in the classroom. • Women’s Circle Presentation

    10:00 am-12:00 pm
    10/14/2020

On October 14 the Women’s Circle will present an American Experience story, “The Bombing of Wall Street.” On September 16, 1920, as hundreds of Wall Street workers headed out for lunch, a horse-drawn cart packed with dynamite exploded in front of Morgan Bank, the world’s most powerful banking institution. The blast turned the nation’s financial center into a bloody war zone and left 38 dead and hundreds seriously injured. As financial institutions around the country went on high alert, many wondered if this was a strike against American capitalism that radical agitators had threatened for so long. A mostly forgotten act of terror that remains unsolved, the bombing helped launch the career of a young J. Edgar Hoover and sparked a bitter national debate about how far the government should go to protect the nation from acts of political violence.

    “Butley” Comedy by Harold Pinter.

On any given day Ben Butley, a self-made train wreck of an English literature professor at a London University, can shrug off everyone and everything with equal ease. But today, the disaster of Butley’s proudly misspent life threatens to dwarf even his cynically fatalistic non-expectations. As embodied by Alan Bates, Butley falls back on the surgically precise wit and savage eloquence that helped put him in his current circumstance in the first place.

  • Gary Hylander Lecture

    1:30 pm-4:00 pm
    10/23/2020

Professor Gary Hylander begins a 4-part lecture series entitled Reconstruction: Confederates, Freedmen and Congress. The Civil War was fought to preserve the Union. Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox brought peace. But peace brought new problems as well. Should Confederate leaders and soldiers be punished? What was the legal and social status of newly freed blacks? Who should manage the details of Reconstruction, Congress or the President? Today, America is still dealing with many of the issues of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
