Our guest speaker this month is David Nevard. The title of his lecture is “Europe’s Lost and Found: Displaced Persons After World War II.” David is a retired IT professional. He developed a lifelong interest in the history and politics of Europe in high school. His wife’s family were displaced persons after World War II. This experience inspired a ten-week course on Displaced Persons, which he led at Brandeis Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (BOLLI) and at Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE) in the Fall of 2019 at Southgate. In the late 1940s, “Displaced Person,” DP, was a term, sometimes pejorative, to describe Europeans who didn’t seem to belong anywhere. Thin, tired, wearing donated clothing, they waited in crowded “camps,” mostly former army barracks, assigned by nationality. Their backgrounds were varied. They had been forced laborers, prisoners of war, concentration camp survivors, people who’d spent the war in hiding or in Siberia. They began new lives in the camps, where Jews, Ukrainians, Poles, and Baltics formed communities. The British and the Americans operated DP camps, but the treatment of some of these DPs was inhumane, particularly if the inhabitants of these camps were Jewish. This lecture will describe the conditions inside these camps and what actions President Harry Truman and General Dwight Eisenhower took to eliminate these inhumane conditions.

Director Phillip Breen combines comedic elements with unnerving silences in this tension-filled production.
