Join Yasmin Azad as she introduces us to her recently published memoir, Stay, Daughter: A Memoir of a Muslim Girlhood. With the revival of Islamic fundamentalism all over the world, Muslim women struggle to reconcile the rules of orthodox Islam with the liberal traditions of the West. Yasmin re-visits her childhood in Sri Lanka to reflect on this dilemma as it played out in her traditional community. Yasmin Azad was born and raised in the Galle Fort, Sri Lanka. After obtaining a degree in English from the University of Ceylon, and a brief stint as a lecturer, she moved to the United States in her twenties. She recently retired after many years as a mental health counselor

Worcester, Massachusetts resident, Gary Landgren, a primarily self-taught pianist, has been playing his brand of honky tonk piano since he was 15 years old. Landgren is a well-rounded performer who adds anecdotal story-telling, jokes and crowd pleasing inter-actions between his high-spirited and masterful piano playing. Gary is a long time Southgate favorite!

“The Perfect Crime: In Love with Murder”

When Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two well-educated college students from a wealthy suburb of Chicago, confessed to the brutal murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, the story made headlines across the country. The unlikely killers not only admitted their guilt, but also bragged that they had committed the crime simply for the thrill of it. As the sensational case unfolded during the summer of 1924, with famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow and Cook County Prosecutor Robert Crowe debating the death penalty and scores of commentators weighing in from the sidelines, the question of motive would be turned over and over again. What first seemed like a simple matter of evil gradually would give way to a complex assessment of the murderers’ minds and set off a national debate about morality and capital punishment.

You may remember Dan as part of the Boston Musical Theater trio which has performed at Southgate several times in the past along with two professional vocalists. Dan has been playing piano in the Boston area since the late ’80s. His versatility enables him to per-form in a wide variety of contexts, from solo piano (jazz or classical) to small group jazz, accompanying jazz vocalists, and cabaret. Dan has performed functions (weddings, corporate events, private parties) throughout New England and has also had regular engagements at The Charles Hotel in Cam-bridge, Tosca in Hingham, and The Marriott in Copley Square. As the mu-sic director of Boston Musical Theater, he has performed many themed caba-ret-style concerts, at the Regattabar, Lincoln Center, The Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, and the National Heritage Museum in Lexington. Boston Musical Theater has also toured in South Korea and Russia, giving con-certs and teaching masterclasses. To-night Dan performs with two instrumentalists, Mark Pucci on bass and Rich Greenblatt on vibraphone.

Professor Gary Hylander begins a new 4-part series on Colonial America with an in-depth look at 4 of the initial major colonies: Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and MA. Gary earned his PhD at Boston College and has been a professor of history at Framingham State University and Stonehill College, as well as a public affairs commentator on local cable news and radio.

Public Programs Coordinator Rachel Quimby will join us for an overview of a nearby treasure! The EcoTarium is a science and nature museum located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Previously known as the New England Science Center, the museum features several permanent and traveling exhibits, the Alden Planetarium, and a variety of wildlife. A wonderful adventure for grandparents to treat their families for an outing!
