Activities at Southgate May 20, 2022 - Now that warm weather has arrived, many people find that they have a renewed enthusiasm for participating in exercise. After all, it's human nature to take it easy during the dark, cold New England months … when even indoor activities can take a back seat to listless, carefree reading under a cozy blanket in your favorite recliner! Our advice is: Go for it! After all, staying active is important at any age. (Of course, before beginning any exercise regimen, you should consult a medical professional to identify those activities most appropriate given your specific health conditions and circumstances.)... • Dan Gabel presents “The Boston Beat” Lecture

    2:00 pm-4:00 pm
    05/11/2021

We know Dan as the vivacious leader of one of Southgate’s favorite bands “Dan Gabel & the Abletones” but he wears many hats! Hailed by the Boston Globe as “the real deal, [a bandleader] that looks and sounds like the 1940s.” Dan is a trombonist, arranger, bandleader, historian, and educator. He has toured internationally with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, as well as the Tommy Dorsey, Cab Calloway, and Hal McIntyre Orchestras. Considered an expert on jazz, big bands, and the Great American Songbook, Dan has lectured at colleges, universities, and special events across the country including Harvard, MIT, and Indiana University. Since 2012 he has served as the President and CEO of the American Big Band Preservation Society. Join Dan today for “The Boston Beat: How the great musicians in New England shaped the big band era.” From Mal Hallett and Jack Marshard to Artie Shaw, Hal McIntyre, and Vaughn Monroe, New England has always been home to some of the greatest musicians. 2:00 pm

Filmed live on stage this not-to-be-missed high energy show stars Original Broadway cast members Jeremy Jordan as “Jack Kelly,” and Kara Lindsay as “Katherine,”. Set in New York City at the turn of the century and based on a
true story, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies! 2:00 pm

  • Southgate’s Annual Resident Artists Show

    1:00 pm-2:30 pm
    05/23/2021

    “Southgate’s Back in Vivid Color!”

Join us as Southgate residents display their works of art in a variety of medium in this afternoon’s gala exhibit! Along with our own accomplished artists, this year we’re adding a special feature called “The Covid Crafters Corner”!
Many of us have taken up new (or revisited) “craft” projects over the past year due to the pandemic. My sources tell me there are some gum wrapper chain experts, paint-by-number aficionados and Legos craftsmen out there! It’s all tongue-in-cheek and will be great fun to witness those ‘covid creations’ first hand. Don’t miss this opportunity
to experience the unique artistic abilities within our own community. Musical accompaniment by the David Jost Jazz Duo. Refreshments will be served.

  • Jumpin Juba

Hand-made music, presented live and in real time. In the words of Steve Hurl, the band’s leader, Jumpin’ Juba is New Orleans swamp-rock, classic boogiewoogie, folk, Memphis rock & roll, and a playful use of everything from calypso to country “stirred into the one blue stew!”
