  • Women’s Circle Breakfast

    9:15 am-12:00 pm
    01/12/2022

Our speaker this morning is Laura Garrity Arquitt. She is the Registrar at the Museum of Russian Icons. Her topic is “Russian Holidays.” From the reverent Orthodox feast on Christmas Eve, to secular Soviet New Year celebrations, Russia is the place to be during the holidays. Merriments include religious ceremonies, children’s parties and recitals, masquerades, caroling, and spectacular decorations. Using images from the Museum of Russian Icons’ collection, the presentation will examine Orthodox images of the Nativity from art historical and theological standpoints, and how they compare with those of western Christianity. We will also explore the history of the Christmas (or Yolka) tree, the origins of Saint Nicholas, and distinctly Russian characters like Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden. In 2010 Laura became the full-time Registrar at the Museum of Russian Icons. She is responsible for the care of the collection and the organization of special exhibitions.

    “Into the Woods”

Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods weaves together many famous fairy tales in an allegorical story of family, love, growing up and the hazy areas between right and wrong. This critically acclaimed production was captured live at London’s Regent’s Park Open Air theatre and was directed by Timothy Sheader. It won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and features Hannah Waddingham as the Witch and Jenna Russell as the Baker’s Wife, among many other stand-out performances. Having passed in Nov., we honor Sondheim’s memory as one of the theater’s most revered and influential composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century and the driving force behind some of Broadway’s most beloved and celebrated shows.

  • Dan Loschen & Boston Musical Theater

    7:30 pm-9:00 pm
    01/24/2022

Dan Loschen came to Boston after finishing at Oberlin with a degree in classical piano. He had always loved jazz and immediately started gigging with singers and as a solo pianist when he moved here in 1986. He earned a master’s degree from NEC in the early 90s, as a jazz pianist, and started teaching regularly as well as continuing to play jazz at clubs and functions. Meanwhile, Boston Musical Theater was formed by Charlotte Kaufman, whose original vision for it was to perform old American musicals and operas. When Charlotte retired, Dan took over the reins, and changed the group’s basic image to a small group (piano and two singers), with occasional larger shows. Recent shows have been dedicated to the music of Gershwin, Kern, Ellington, Arlen, Porter, and other greats of the American musical pantheon. Dan continues to teach extensively at the Rivers School Conservatory, teaching jazz and classical piano as well as jazz ensembles and music theory.
