Women's Circle Breakfast
Our guest speaker for the Women’s Circle Breakfast is Southgate resident John McClymer. His topic is “Hoops: The Woman’s Sphere and Some Mid-Victorian Fashion Puzzles.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, states-man, theater director, and critic, born 1749, died 1832 stated: “Women often complain that men are unjust towards their sex, in withholding from them higher mental culture, and in not allow-ing them full access to the sciences, thus keeping them down to mere household duties, and to the government of the domestic circle.” Goethe nicely summarized women’s com-plaints against the so-called “Woman’s Sphere.” And nothing would seem an apter embodiment of its constraints than the hoop skirt. Yet women, as we shall see, championed hoops as liberating. We will explore the surprising in-sights we can gain from the cultural wars over hoops. Join us!
