    Resident and storyteller Helena Leet-Pellegrini tells humorous, thought provoking tales about the ordinary and not so ordinary events of everyday life and relationships. Helena won a storytelling award at MassMouth Boston Story Grand Slam and has been a favorite at several MA storytelling spaces. At Southgate Helena will share her journey through different stages of relationship titled “Love Follies Over Time,” and her journey to rekindle being young at heart titled “Wander in Wonder.”

  • Women’s Circle Breakfast

    The speaker this morning is Hannah Kane, the State Representative for the Eleventh Worcester District. The title of her presentation is “The Role of Women in Public Service.” The case for women legislators is strong. A recent University of Chicago study found that women legislators tend to bring more resources back to their home districts, are more likely to work across the aisle, and sponsor and co-sponsor more pieces of legislation than their male counterparts do. The most recent of Hannah’s many awards is the Vic Karaian Award from the Mass. Environmental Health Association in May of 2022 in recognition for her leadership and primary sponsorship of the Statewide Accelerated Public Health for Every Community Act.

    Julie Andrews hosts this comprehensive chronicle of the American musical that captures a century of Broadway through interviews, archival footage, personal writings, newsreels and home movies. Ziegfeld, Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Rodgers and Hammerstein are just a few of the featured icons, along with dozens of musicals! This disc includes “Give my Regards to Broadway (1893-1927) and “Syncopated City” (1919-1933).

  • Sima & Yulia Piano & Violin Concert

    Sima Kustanovich is one of the Northeast’s most sought after pianists. Hailed by the Worcester T&G for the “extraordinary intensity and brilliance of her playing,” she concertizes in some of the most acclaimed international venues. She received a Master of Music from the St. Petersburg Conservatory; then joined its faculty and accepted a coveted appointment to the famed Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater, working intensively with such luminaries as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova. An esteemed teacher, she served on the faculties at Clark University and several area higher education venues. A native Russian, Yulia Potvin Zhuravleva is representative of the Russian “passionate” style of violin playing whose musicianship is internationally recognized. She has performed as an orchestra musician with renowned conductors across the country. Yulia has held concertmaster positions and performed as a violin soloist with the USO. She regularly performs with the Worcester Festival Orchestra, Worcester Bach Consort, and Chamber Orchestra “Carpe Diem” (Spain). Since 2018 Yulia has held a faculty position at WPI. The duo will perform original – arranged works (Vivaldi /Respigi and Gershwin/Frolov ), as well as a sonata that they have created from movements of sonatas by classical composers ( Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Mozart ).

  • Classical Pianist I-Heung Lee

    Classical pianist I-Heung Lee will play selections of Chopin, Bach, Liszt, and more. Music critics have described her performances as ‘graceful, thoughtful, and intelligent, touched with a unique style of artistic sophistication.’ She received a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance, a Piano Post-Graduate Diploma, and a Piano Professional Diploma, studying at the Julliard School of Music and the City University of NY.

His topic is entitled “Since Henry Ford Apologized to Me”: Using Stereotyped Ethnic Voices to Subvert Ethnic Stereotypes in Early 20th Century U.S. This multimedia presentation examines how second-generation American Jews used their new-found access to popular culture, including phonograph records and movies, to challenge anti-Semitic stereotypes and slurs.
