  • Steel Accent Steel Drum Concert

    The sound of the steel drum has a unique relaxing effect on people. When hearing the gentle sounds of this instrument, you can’t help but feel like you are sitting on a beach on an island, sipping a cocktail. It is that feeling that Phil Andrews and the members of Steel Accent have come to love and appreciate. For the past 10 years, it has been Phil’s goal to bring that fun, relaxing sound of the Is- lands to cocktail receptions, weddings, concerts, corporate events, and backyard parties all over New England! Steel Accent plays a variety of traditional calypso tunes, as well as some tropical rock, reggae, pop, and light jazz. They make their Southgate debut this evening.

    Sincere. Original. Silly. Theatrical. Hungry. These are all words that are often used to describe Daily Special. Daily Special is an a cappella vocal quartet based in southern New England. They have performed everywhere from schools, churches, and assisted living facilities to high-profile, professional concert venues. The members of Daily Special take pride in their goal of being model citizens of the a cappella world, sharing their music and leadership skills with their communities. Always striving for musical excellence, they have won numerous accolades and awards. They love to sing for all audiences, and they can’t wait to perform for YOU. Making their Southgate debut!

    Our speaker this morning is Owen Sholes, Professor Emeritus in Biology from Assumption University. His topic is “Earth’s Climate: Present, Past, and Future.” Professor Sholes will begin with the present global climate, which includes the varying climate extremes that are now occurring. He will look back at three million years of climate history to see what the baseline was before human activity changed things and then look forward at the possible paths we might take, which will depend on what we do now. Professor Sholes is retired from Assumption University. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Cornell University. His book, “Stopping By Woods: Robert Frost as New England Naturalist,” was published in 2018.

  • Guitarist Carlos Odria

    Peruvian-born guitarist Carlos Odria has been described as a “breathtakingly talented musician…with an immense technical skill” (Worcester Telegram). His original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards and Latin American tunes deliver an exciting blend of international styles such as bossanova, rumba flamenca,and Afro-Caribbean vibes with an improvisational approach inspired by the rich tradition of American jazz. He holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Florida State University. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of Music and Interdisciplinary Arts at Worcester State University.

    Classical pianist I-Heung Lee will play selections of Chopin, Bach, Liszt, and more. Music critics have described her performances as ‘graceful, thoughtful, and intelligent, touched with a unique style of artistic sophistication’. She received a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance, a Piano Post-Graduate Diploma, and a Piano Professional Diploma, studying at the Julliard School of Music and the City University of NY.

    Men’s Breakfast Club again welcomes Dennis Hohengasser. His topic is “Protect Yourself From Medicare Fraud.” Did you know that over $60 billion of our tax dollars are lost to Medicare fraud each year? Come meet Dennis Hohengasser, a representative of the Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program, at our September Men’s Breakfast Club Meeting, and participate in a discussion on how to prevent, detect, and report healthcare errors, fraud, and abuse. We all can have an active role in protecting Medicare for ourselves and future generations. This informational session will provide you with the tools to become a more informed and engaged health care consumer, including the importance of protecting your Medi- care number. Although new Medicare cards have random numbers and no longer Social Security numbers, you still need to be vigilant and protect yourself from becoming a victim to deceptive marketing and medical identity theft. All are welcome to the presentation.

Going on to play an array of roles on stage & screen in Broadway Musicals including Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and Blythe Spirit as well as numerous Disney films, she achieved worldwide fame as fictional writer/sleuth, Jessica Fletcher in the whodunit series, Murder She Wrote, one of the longest running and most popular detective drama series in television history. Join Patty Carver in a story and nostalgia filled, music packed, fitting tribute to legendary entertainment icon, the incomparable Angela Lansbury!
