Summer is a great time to make your physical health a priority. The warmer weather and blue skies can make it easier to get out, pick up new hobbies, and be active. While staying active and getting outside is important for your health, it is equally important to be safe and mindful while doing so.
The following are tips to help you stay healthy and active outdoors in the rising temperatures:
Stay Hydrated: Older adults are at an increased risk of dehydration, so it’s important that you drink a lot of water when spending time outdoors being active or spending a lot of time in the sun. The National Council of Aging recommends that you drink at least one-third of your body weight in water per day. In an effort to minimize bloating and abdominal discomfort, drink slowly throughout the day instead of trying to get all of your water intake in one or two sittings.
Avoid Peak Heat Hours: The hottest time of the day typically occurs from 3PM and can last until 5:30AM. In order to protect yourself from dehydration and overheating, it’s recommended to stay out of the sun and indoors during this time. If you’re still looking to move your body during peak heat hours, consider exercising indoors at the Southgate at Shrewsbury fitness center and indoor pool.
Protect Your Eyes and Skin: When spending time outdoors in the hotter months, you should always keep in mind how to protect your eyes and your skin from the sun. Grab a hat or a pair of sunglasses before taking a walk, and always apply sunscreen to your body before coming into contact with the sunshine. Also look for clothing and hats rated for sun protection to layer over sunscreen for added protection.
Take Short Walks: Exercise is important, and exercising outdoors can be beneficial to both your mental and physical health. Consider taking multiple short walks throughout the day to break up your sun exposure. Taking several short walks instead of one long one will also allow you to move more, rather than getting all of your daily exercise done in one outing.
Take Up Gardening: Gardening is a great way for seniors to spend time outdoors and work on something they’re proud of. Gardening can be relaxing and gives you the ability to do something different outdoors. To protect yourself from the sun while tending to your garden, wear a sun hat and gardening gloves. Portable gardening benches are easy take along and unfold to allow yourself a comfortable rest while tending to your plants.
