Our History
In 1969, recognizing the need for a thoughtfully designed and compassionate based alternative for seniors, partners Frank O’Connor Sr., Donald Flanagan, Henry Camosse Sr., and Raymond Lauring opened Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. SNRC was founded on the principles of quality care, while offering an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation and healing with respect to our residents’ comfort and dignity. Situated on 30 pastoral acres, it was the beginning of a long-term plan to create a campus of continuing care.
The extraordinary success of SNRC brought about the next step with the opening of The Shrewsbury Medical Center in 1972. From its inception, The Medical Center has been filled with physicians with private practices offering a wide array of specialties. That still holds true today with advancements that include a state-of-the-art imaging center, and dermatology and audiology clinics.
Always mindful that companionship and community were essential to one’s wellbeing, Donald recognized that security, peace of mind, social, recreational and artistic pursuits were the basis of a fulfilling lifestyle for seniors.
In 1989, after many years of research and planning, the partners opened the doors of Southgate at Shrewsbury and the campus was complete. Today, Southgate is recognized as the premier destination for retirement living, offering Independent Living, Assisted Living and skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Still family owned, Southgate has established itself as a sophisticated, arts appreciative community and is now home to over 200 active seniors.
